The Why Behind This Episode:
Something that became very clear to me early on in my work as a nutritionists was the link between our eating patterns and mental health. What we eat can hugely impact how we feel emotionally, and how we feel emotionally, can hugely impact our eating patterns and food choices.
When we struggle with things like emotional eating, disordered eating, poor body image, nutrition deficiencies, we are almost always struggling in some way with our mental health. Whether that be anxiety, or having days where we feel really low and down about ourselves.
It was noticing this link that really drove me to becoming a Master NLP Practitioner, learning about the brain, as well as keeping up to date with the research on the link between nutrition and mental heath.
So for this episode, I’m bringing on the show another good friend of mine, Sophia Dawson who is a psychologist specializing in working with young people aged 14-25, with a special interest in Nutritional Psychology (looking at the role nutrition plays in mental health).
Sophia started her private psychology company Bloomers Psychology in August last year, which has taken off rapidly, and she is now in high demand. What I also love about Sophia is she is currently working along side the Nutrition Psychology Guru – Julia Rucklidge, Author or The Better Brain. https://thebetterbrainbook.com/
Here’s what we cover in this episode:
- Understanding the link between Anxiety and Comfort/Emotional Eating
- Common challenges we can face with journaling our negative thoughts
- Body image – letting go of expectations.
- Self-compassion – Breaking it down into easier steps.
- The importance of wholefoods and micronutrients for mental health.
